This program is designed to give the beginning climber a strong introduction to climbing and all that it entails. Participants will work through a comprehensive training program to prepare them mentally and physically to become competent climbers. 


Two types of courses are available - Beginner and Advanced

Beginner - This class thoroughly covers all of the basics of rock climbing and is a great way to gain an overall appreciation for the sport. Participants will spend most of their time outdoors learning skills, and some additional time in our private climbing gym for skills instruction.
Advanced - The advanced program is for those who already have a grasp of the basics such as belaying and the common climbing knots. This program will work on climbing skills, building anchors with specialized equipment, and some rope rescue technique.


What to Know:

-Daily excursions may include hikes of 1-5 miles to reach the climbing area and return to the bus. 

-Snacks are provided however lunch is not. Please plan to bring lunch on each day of the academy.

-Topics covered: Safety, climbing commands, belaying, rappelling, various knots, harness/helmet use, body positioning and movement, rope care and management, use of protection, and history of climbing. 

-If minimum enrollment (5) is not met, all participants will receive a full tuition reimbursement. 

*BSA members will earn the Climbing Merit Badge upon completion of this academy.


What to Wear:

Clothing should be durable and comfortable enough to wear all day in various types of weather. 

-Shoes: Hiking boots or trail shoes.
-Pants: Full length flexible pants recommended. Dresses and skirts are not appropriate rock climbing attire.
-Shirt: No loose fitting shirts.
-Rain jacket


Other items:

-Water bottle (Minimum 2L)



Appropriate lunch items for eating and transporting outdoors.

All climbing equipment, including backpacks, is provided for use during the program. Participants may use their own equipment after inspection by a trained CAP instructor.
